Subject: VPHA status update 9.7.2019: conferences, ALD thesis list, Zenodo, ORCID / poster thesis list DL 11.7.

Dear VPHA contributors and prospective contributors,

With this email, we would like to update you with the progress in Virtual Project on the History of ALD (VPHA) since the previous general VPHA status update on April 28

Major steps forward have been the following:
·       As many contributors supported the idea of Zenodo sharing, and noone opposed it,  Zenodo community for the Virtual Project on the History of ALD has been created: https://zenodo.org/communities/vpha/. The community contains currently only one document, more to come. Before uploading more, we need to collect a list of ORCID identifiers of our contributors (more on that below).
·       Poster on the doctoral thesis list on ALD has been created and presented at the EuroCVD-BalticALD 2019 conference (https://www.eurocvd-balticald2019.lu/). Twitter notes: #CVDALD2019 #VPHA

You can find below more information on the next steps in VPHA:

·       Updating the VPHA thesis list for poster at the coming AVS ALD/ALE 2019 conference https://ald2019.avs.org/ (please send in missing info by 11.7., to make sure it gets entered in the poster),
·       Collecting a list of author ORCID’s to continue with uploading materials to Zenodo (you can add yours here),
·       Note on the preparations for the final review article.

At the end of this email, you find also links to ALD History Blog posts since the previous update.

Best regards,
Riikka Puurunen, voluntary VPHA coordinator

Poster(s): Updating the VPHA thesis list for the coming AVS ALD/ALE 2019 conference

At the EuroCVD-BalticALD 2019 conference, we presented a poster called "Overview of doctoral theses on Atomic Layer Deposition collected in the Virtual Project on the History of ALD". You find the abstract and poster in the VPHA website via http://vph-ald.com/ALD-history-publications.html. Direct links:  abstract. Poster.
Picture of poster at the conference with professors Van Ommen and Puurunen can be found in Twitter: https://twitter.com/rlpuu/status/1144519086837309440 (conference hashtag #CVDALD2019). The same poster was also shown at the ALD fundamentals event in Delft, July 3, 2019, https://www.tudelft.nl/en/faculty-of-applied-sciences/about-faculty/departments/chemical-engineering/scientific-staff/van-ommen-group/workshop-fundamentals-of-ald/ (Twitter: #ALDfun).

At the moment, we are preparing for the next ALD conference, which also will have a poster from VPHA. The poster abstract and supplementary info is available via the VPHA website, through http://vph-ald.com/ALD-history-publications.html
·       Poster presentation: "Overview of doctoral theses on Atomic Layer Deposition collected in the Virtual Project on the History of ALD", (long list of authors), 19th International Conference on Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD 2019), July 21-24, 2019, Bellevue, Washington, http://ald2019.avs.org. Submitted abstract and supplementary information.

The plan is to update the poster from EuroCVD-BalticALD with info on missing theses obtained in the meantime. Thesis information that comes in by July 11 can at least be accommodated; the plan is to create the materials on July 12. Those not being able to meet the deadline of July 11: please still send in info of missing theses, we will keep on updating the data in the VPHA-ALD-thesis-list, available via http://vph-ald.com/VPHAopenfiles.html

I will personally not be travelling to the ALD 2019 conference, this year; Prof. Ruud van Ommen and Prof. Fred Roozeboom have kindly agreed to present the VPHA poster at the conference.

Zenodo / ORCID identifiers for VPHA contributors - please add/create yours

ORCID identifiers of authors are nowadays often requested when submitting a manuscript to a scientific journal - and also for uploading VPHA materials in Zenodo in https://zenodo.org/communities/vpha/. For those unfamiliar with this concept, Wikipedia explains, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ORCID: "The ORCID iD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a nonproprietary alphanumeric code to uniquely identify scientific and other academic authors and contributors". As example, the ORCID of Riikka Puurunen is 0000-0001-8722-4864 and the corresponding public ORCID link https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8722-4864.

Many VPHA contributors already have an ORCID, and we have started to collect info of them here: temp-VPHA-ORCID-collection (hyperlink embedded), direct link here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LCFCqJR9171VsQv7t_8OR6wyAhk6Xg2T3SJ4vS6GZ1M/. We will be updating the ORCIDs with info we find, and you can also proactively leave a note in the file, with your ORCID link, or optionally a note (e.g. that you do not have an ORCID but will / will not create one). Later, this info will be moved to ALD-history-evolving-file. Having an ORCID is not obligatory for submissions, but it makes things easier (in my view), so if you don’t have one, you might want to create one (but this is not obligatory).

Note on preparations for the final review article

The potential final review article is still on the agenda, although it has not progressed much in the past months. In one way, of course completing the ALD thesis list for the VPHA posters and collecting the ORCIDs of VPHA contributors can also be seen as preparations towards the final review article. More to come on this item later.
