Wikipedia 15 years - status of WikiALD update

Wikipedia was launched exactly fifteen years ago, on January 15, 2001 (https://15.wikipedia.org/). Wikipedia and VPHA share much of the same philosophy: both are worldwide efforts based on voluntary work, and both are aimed for collectively creating correct information for everyone's benefit. Today should be a good day to share what we have done already in VPHA related to the Wikipedia ALD history update, Item #11 in the VPHA Publication Plan. These are easy to track back through "view history" tab in Wikipedia.

Atomic Layer Deposition

Already before VPHA was created, a significant change in the ALD history description was made on January 31, 2011 by user ALD Aziz (i.e. Aziz Abdulagatov, who significantly helped in initiating VPHA) "ALD was first published under name “Molecular Layering” in the early 1960s by Prof. S.I. Kol’tsov from Leningrad (Lensovet) Technological Institute (LTI). These ALD experiments were conducted under the scientific supervision of corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Prof. V.B. Aleskovskii. The concept of the ALD process was first proposed by Prof. V.B. Aleskovskii in his Ph.D. thesis published in 1952.<ref>V. B. Aleskovskii, Zh. Prikl. Khim. 47, 2145 (1974); [J. Appl. Chem. USSR. 47, 2207, (1974)].</ref> <ref>R.L. Puurunen, J. Appl. Phys. 97, 121301 (2005).</ref> <ref>A.A. Malygin, J. Ind. Eng. Chem. Vol.12, No. 1, (2006) 1-11.</ref> "

  • December 21, 2015: some mistakes corrected (they were reported in a previous post) and Suntola ALE essay by Puurunen added as reference. "This technique was invented in 1974, then patented the same year (patent published in 1977), by Dr. [[Tuomo Suntola]], at the Instrumentarium company, Finland. <ref>Puurunen, R. L., A short history of atomic layer deposition: Tuomo Suntola's Atomic Layer Epitaxy, Chem. Vap. Deposition 20 (2014) 332-344. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cvde.201402012/full</ref>"

The updates made so far in VPHA have been small, easy-to-make updates; more through editing will follow.

While VPHA is dedicated to history, it is evident that the Atomic Layer Deposition page could be improved in many other ways, too. A general update is not within the scope of VPHA, but we can do something already during VPHA. One of the first things to do is to find a better introductory image (the current one leads one to think too much of growing full atomic layers in each cycle). If you have a suitable image in mind, of which you have the copyright and would be willing to donate to common usage through Wikipedia, please contact us.

Everyone interested in updating Wikipedia ALD pages is welcome to join the WikiALD update effort, as well as VPHA in general.
