1) New: ALD thesis list

We have started to collect a list of doctoral theses on ALD. The goal is to collect together information on works made worldwide. As a start, the information from the FinALD40 exhibition and the ML essay by Malygin et al. were combined, thank you for Oksana Yurkevich for doing this. Now we move one, by collecting other information. Please, everyone, check that the info from the theses from your laboratories are included.

Links to the files you can find through http://vph-ald.com/VPHAopenfiles.html, and they are also here:

2) Questions to the ALD History review

We continue to collect questions related to the ALD history review. Please add yours in the dedicated file (under heading … questions after Jan 10 ...). You find a link to through http://vph-ald.com/VPHAopenfiles.html, direct link here: ALD-history-review-questions. Or you can also send your questions to me or the address info@ vph-ald.com.

Regarding the questions given by Jan 10, we will somehow facilitate further discussion on them. I don’t know yet, how is the best (/good) way to proceed, I will come back to this. It is clear already that things become visible and moved forward simply by writing down these questions, I am thankful for everyone’s contribution.

3) Wikipedia update

Wikipedia update is progressing, slowly but steadily. Suntola has his own Wikipedia page now in English, still to be filled with more info (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuomo_Suntola). Jonas and Angel are active in editing Wikipedia, I am helping with the contents, and Suntola, too.

Wikimedia Commons has been started to be used as a place to upload ALD-related photos and schemes for use in Wikipedia of all languages. I try to learn this system now. Suntola’s photograph was the first to be uploaded: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tuomo_Suntola,_2014.JPG. This is now free for everyone to use without my separate permission, also for commercial use, provided that a copyright line is added. Re-reading the Wikimedia Commons credit line instructions, I understand that the minimum credit line for this photo is something like: © Riikka Puurunen 2014 / CC-BY-SA-4.0).

ALD History Blog posts on the topic,

4) ALD terminology discussion

In LinkedIn, there has been delighting discussion on the terminology, with top-impact people participating, including Markku Leskelä and Victor Drozd. Thank you for participating! Discussion will continue with topics, which everyone can propose. Topics are collected here: VPHA-ALD-terminlogy, you find the link always through the page  http://vph-ald.com/VPHAopenfiles.html.

5) ALD 2016 abstract

Currently, there are 45 authors from 13 countries (Korea was the latest to join - welcome to Prof Hwang). Most likely, the number of authors will still grow before the VPHA DL of February 7.

I have been in contact with the ALD 2016 organizers, trying to make sure that our quite exceptional abstract will fit in the systems. This work is on-going, I hope the result will be positive.

I have sent the abstract for all co-authors to see twice already and as no-one has proposed alterations to the contents, we can consider the abstract text finalized. We have also now formulated the title for the work. I hope that in its generality, this fits everyone. If you see needs for alteration, please contact me, say, by January 28, 2016.

6) VPHA in numbers

We have in VPHA as of January 21, 2016:
  • 45 co-authors from
  • 13 countries
  • 352 ALD publications listed for up to 1986
  • 423 VPHA comments written on them
  • 657 comments still to write, according to the bookkeeping of VPHA.

January 8, we had 402 comments written, so there is positive progress taking place. A lot of course still to do. More people are warmly welcome to join this the voluntary reading effort - please read a few papers and invite your colleagues to join the reading, too!
