Dear current VPHA contributors,

For your information: as we anticipated - see VPHA status update 17.1.2019 - the abstract submission deadline for the Baltic ALD conference has been postponed. The new extended deadline is Jan 31, 2019, see https://www.eurocvd-balticald2019.lu/. We are grateful for this extension.

Thank you to the several people who responded within the original DL (20.1.): sent information of new affiliation, proposed new theses to the list, commented that the abstract contents are ok, and confirmed authorship or will to be just acknowledged. Notes of updates to come are show in real time here <link removed>.

With the extended submission deadline, we can agree a new internal deadline related to updating info for the poster abstract. We can agree that author - and thesis! - information that comes in by Jan 25 can be accounted for in the abstract. Information sent in later than that can still be accounted for in the poster itself.

Last week, the 14th International Baltic Conference on Atomic Layer Deposition was organized in St. Petersburg, Russia (http://www.bald2016.ru/). Similarly as for some earlier ALD conferences, I wrote a travel report from the conference: http://aldhistory.blogspot.fi/2016/10/balticald2016-stpetersburg-travel-notes-puurunen.html. I had the honour to give the first invited talk of the Baltic ALD 2016 conference. This is - of course - thanks to the Virtual Project on the History of ALD (VPHA), which we have been collectively working on since July 2013. Additionally, I had a presentation about conformality investigations of ALD thin films with recently-developed microscopic lateral high-aspect-ratio (LHAR) test structures (more info here and here).

The first commenting round of our JVSTA manuscript has ended. Thank you for all who gave comments upon it in the shared file <link removed>.

Regarding the next steps, there will be a major change coming in the next manuscript version, of which I would like to inform everyone with this email. The major change is that all co-authors of the ALD-history-evolving-file will by default be included as co-authors of the JVSTA manuscript. One can opt out from the author list of course if one wishes to do so, and be thanked in Acknowledgements. This requires action from everyone: please read carefully this whole e-mail, and especially the paragraph in blue at the bottom.

Today I have submitted slides of a 2-min “flash presentation” of the VPHA poster to the ALD 2016 Ireland conference. I think that the voting result nicely highlights ALD work of different types made at different locations.  

By the way: did you all already view the essay by Malygin et al. in Chem. Vap. Deposition 2015 (DOI: 10.1002/cvde.201502013)? Prof. A. A. Malygin has a very nice slot for his historical invited talk at ALD 2016: at the plenary opening session on Monday morning at 9:00. I am looking forward to his talk, and of course all talks and informal discussions at the conferences, too.

VPHA communication: 2nd reading distribution round (target: Jun 8)

We are about to start the 2nd round of distributing papers to read n VPHA.

Each of you can expect to get 3-5 papers to read within the next few days (you can view the distribution plan in the VPHA-author-info-update file, 2nd tab).

Those who can read Russian will get five papers. We have more papers in Russian that can be distributed this way, so if you can read Russian and are willing to read more, please let us know (email info@ vph-ald.com). More people are also welcome to join the reading. Especially if you know a person who can read Russian and would maybe be interested to join, you can give him/her a hint of VPHA. Volunteers can also spontaneously contact us at info@ vph-ald.com.

Those people who get less than five papers, in addition to the publications assigned to you, you could consider reading and commenting some of the central early ALD publications, e.g.:

A combined HERALD Working group 2 workshop and 4th annual seminar of ALDCoE "ALD precursors and processes" will be organized May 23-24 in Helsinki, see http://www.aldcoe.fi/herald/index.html.

As one of the organizers, I will naturally participate this event. There will be many posters by local ALD scientist. It should be good to present an overview the progress of VPHA at this event, so we plan to send in an organizational VPHA poster, similarly as we did at Baltic ALD in Tartu. A draft of the related abstract is attached to this email. <attachment not included in this ALD History Blog post>

In the Acknowledgements section, we would like to extend thanks to all VPHA participants. Please have a look at this section and let me know if you see your name missing or incorrectly spelled, or if you see other needs for revision. The email below was sent today to 30 potential VPHA co-authors as a check-point to see, who we will send out early ALD publications for reading and commenting to finalize the VPHA reading (we are now about 40% done). 

If you read this message and have not yet been in our list of prospective co-authors, this would be a very good time to join the effort, also listed as a collaboration at european-ald.net. For sharing a bit of your time and brainpower with us, you will get to be an author of the poster presentation at ALD 2016. Please indicate your interest e.g. in an email sent to info@ vph-ald.com. Please tell in your message the languages in which you can read publications and optionally your ALD-related speciality and other relevant info. 

Everyone with some ALD knowledge is welcome to join and help to get this important work completed. We already have participants from Europe, North America and Asia. It would be nice to have someone involved from Australia and South America, where I know that people are working with ALD. Perhaps there is already someone working with ALD in Africa, too?
