1. VPHA abstract to Ireland ALD 2016 conference (#9 in the Publication Plan)

The ALD 2016 conference in Ireland will be the place to complete the VPHA reading with the final presentation.

We have almost 40 authors with whom we need to agree on the contents of the abstract; it is good to reserve time to agree on the contents. Please find the current draft abstract text below. Comments on the contents are of course welcome.

< content removed on purpose >

All those who have participated in the VPHA reading by sharing at least one comment --- who are thus listed as contributors in the ALD-history-evolving-file --- will by default be authors of this work. Would some _not_ like to be an author, please let me know (email works fine). Author list will be alphabetical.

As said in the abstract, we plan to generate a recommended reading list of early ALD publications. This we will do by some public voting system next spring, where are VPHA co-authors can participate. We will think of the details with a few people and come back to the full VPHA group later on the plans.

2. General scientific review on the history of ALD (#10 in the Publication Plan)

It is getting time to prepare for the general scientific review on the history of ALD. All VPHA co-authors can be authors of the review. Participation in the VPHA reading and abstracts does not make one a co-author of the review yet, however; to qualify as an author, one of course has to contribute to the planning and/or writing of the review itself. Author list will be alphabetical.

The first step towards the review is that we will collect questions to which the review should answer, and other suggestions regarding the review. If you would like to participate as a review author, it is advisable to participate in this question-forming stage, too. Please share your view on the questions to be answered in the Google docs file created for this purpose. The direct link is here, and you can also find it through the VPHA website page http://vph-ald.com/VPHAopenfiles.html. The goal is to keep the file open for editing until January 10, 2016.

Of course, all those who wish to be co-authors of the review article, should actively participate in the reading, too, as the comments created in the reading form a base for the review. A minimum of, say, 20 commented articles per regular review author is expected. (A few persons who have had a significant role in the early developments of ALD can be excused of this “rule”.) I expect that several review authors will write more than 50 comments on the ALD-history-evolving-file.

3. List of ALD conferences

Regarding VPHA and the history of ALD in general, it is interesting to know, where and when have there been conferences/workshops on ALD, who have organized them, and whether there are records (abstract books, proceedings books, etc) of those events. To have this info collected in one place, I started drafting such a list as a separate page in the ALD History Blog: http://aldhistory.blogspot.fi/p/ald-conferences.html. There was also an ALD History Blog post on this topic: http://aldhistory.blogspot.fi/2015/12/page-under-construction-ald-conferences.html

Today is tomorrow’s history, so I include in this list also future conferences, with abstract deadlines, making it still more useful for ALD scientists.

When you notice items to add/update, please send me the info to include by e.g. email.

4. List of ALD reviews

It is interesting to know, what kinds of reviews have been written on ALD over the years. This is important for the VPHA period (up to 1986), but of course later, too. It should not be too difficult to make such a list --- twice I already made the list, for my JAP 2005 and 2013 reviews --- so I started making the list within the ALD History Blog. You can find the list at: http://aldhistory.blogspot.fi/p/list-of-reviews.html. When you notice items to add/update, please send me the info to include by e.g. email.

5. ALD in Wikipedia

Updating Wikipedia pages is one of the publication plan outcomes listed for VPHA (#11, http://vph-ald.com/Publication%20Plan.html). I have myself not been active in updating Wikipedia, but other VPHA co-authors have been.

I had a quick look on the status of ALD-related pages in Wikipedia --- and was surprised of missing info and even errors that I see. I wrote a separate post of my findings in the ALD History Blog, http://aldhistory.blogspot.fi/2015/12/ald-in-wikipedia-status-and-surprises.html. The post raised discussion immediately, both as a comment in the blog as well as in Twitter.

It seems time to start getting active regarding the Wikipedia updates, too. Are there people in the VPHA group, who would be interested in participating in the core group that plans and makes the Wikipedia updates? Maybe there are some involved who have already been updating Wikipedia? Please let Jonas Sundqvist and Angel Yanguas-Gil know if you are interested; they have volunteered to lead the Wikipedia update activities. Emails are: < > and < >. One can of course join these activities later, too.

6. Recent posts in ALD History Blog

The ALD History Blog has been well received: as of 7.12.2015, it has been viewed already over 1800 times. Since the previous VPHA status update 18.11.2015, several blog posts have been published, I list them here for your easy access (newest ones first):

7. VPHA in numbers & invitation to more ALD scientists to join VPHA

Numbers as of 6.12.2015:
·                     Articles listed: 347
·                     Comments given: 367
·                     Comments needed: 693

Looking at these numbers and how they have evolved with time, it is obvious that the reading task will not be completed during 2015; the work will extend to 2016. This is ok.

To get the work completed, it is important to have more people joining the reading work. The general invitation to join is of course valid all the time. We also plan to contact personally ALD scientists worldwide and invite them to join. If you have in mind some people who are not yet participating and who should be contacted, please let us know. Email to me (Riikka Puurunen) at firstname.lastname@vtt.fi will do, and so will info@ vph-ald.com. Contacting is planned to be made well before Christmas, to allow the new volunteers sufficient time to participate also in the generation of questions regarding the future scientific ALD history review.
