VPHA communication on voting + JVSTA special issue

The email below discussing VPHA voting and JVSTA 2017 special issue was today sent to 66 VPHA co-authors and 31 prospective co-authors.
 ----
Dear VPHA colleagues,

With this communication, I would like to continue on the topic of voting. The voting has started and the deadline given for finishing, June 15th, is coming close. The partial votes of three persons are already included in the VPHA-voting-file (voting through the VPHA-voting-ENTRY-file).

How to vote? Recently, I got an email from a VPHA participant, asking for advice basically on “How should I vote?” Many are probably thinking of the same. What should one give points to? Thing is: there are no absolute criteria other than described in the VPHA-voting-instructions. Everyone can make their own preferred list of publications, and everyone will have a bit different criteria. Imagine the situation that you have a new colleague who wants to get an understanding of early works on ALD. What original publications would you recommend for him/her to read?

Explanatory paragraph to voting. Because everyone will have their own criteria for voting, and it can be interesting to know what these criteria were, it will make sense to offer everyone the possibility of write an explanatory paragraph (one paragraph, which may consist of many sentences) to explain the basis of his/her voting. I have added a cell for each voter in the VPHA-voting-ENTRY-file as well as the VPHA-voting-file to accommodate this.

I want to update my vote, what to do? The best is to copy-paste your old vote from VPHA-voting-file to the VPHA-voting-ENTRY-file, and after you are done, send an email to info@ vph-ald.com to let us know that you have update the vote. We’ll copy-paste the updated vote to the main file.  (This is an instruction I just made up --- someone could comment upon this, whether it is easy enough to do.)

What shall we do with the result of voting? The result of voting will be ordered and published in the ALD 2016 Ireland poster, as promised in the abstract. How about use after ALD 2016? Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology A (JVSTA) publishes a special issue on ALD, where submissions are wished from the ALD 2016 presentations. Deadline is September 6. Would it be a good idea to write a short Letter to JVSTA, where the result of voting, the recommended reading list, would be published? This publication would have a very narrow scope, basically explaining VPHA up to the point of voting, presenting the result of voting, and probably analyzing the result a bit. Logically, everyone, who participates in the voting, would be an author of such Letter (alphabetical author list is easiest), and all other VPHA co-authors should be thanked in the Acknowledgements. Please let me know what you think about this.

Best regards,
Riikka Puurunen, VPHA coordinator
